ELOAĦ: Scientist-Composer Elmar C. Fuchs and the Art Rock of The Book of Pain

ELOAĦ is the art rock project of musician, composer and scientist Elmar C. Fuchs. Their 2024 album The Book of Pain has been approved for the U-Rock® Network.

An ensemble, not a band

The project's website says ELOAĦ was founded in 1993. Rather than a fixed band, it is "an international ensemble of musicians brought together for each project." It blends rock, jazz, classical and experimental music. The current line-up shown on the site is: - Elmar C. Fuchs on vocals, guitars and piano - Dominik Mittergradnegger on saxophone - Johan van der Meer on drums and percussion - Orion Roos on electric guitars - Lila Herderberg on vocals - Zarja Medved on viola - Peter Douwenga on bass

Reviewers have long called Fuchs an Austrian artist. His MusicSubmit campaign and website list Leeuwarden in the Netherlands.

Science and soul

"Alongside my music, I work as a scientist," Fuchs told U-Rock® Network, "and my artistic work often explores connections between science, philosophy and personal experience." The project's roots go back to the early 1990s and his friend and mentor Jörg Horner. Their improvisations led to the Mondstein Chronicles trilogy, and the 2008 album Ode to Brother Horn was made as a tribute after Horner's death. Progression magazine rated it 14 of 16.

The Book of Pain

The Book of Pain (2024) has 17 songs, each exploring "a distinct facet of emotional intensity — fear, anxiety, loss and inner conflict." It moves between intimate acoustic passages, atmospheric soundscapes and heavier moments. A hand-numbered limited LP of selected tracks is available from BigBadWolf Records. Next comes Cosmic Glory, planned as a double LP on transparent vinyl with gold elements. It is led by the single "Water's Not Just H₂O," inspired by scientific research into water's unusual properties.
