Conner Smith: A Nashville Storyteller Steering His Own Course

Band Writer · 2026-10-26

From a viral college-football song to Valory Records singles and a 2026 acoustic album on Elah Records, the Nashville native keeps the focus on the song.

City/region: Nashville, Tennessee (U.S. South)

Origin

Conner Vickery Smith was born on September 6, 2000, and raised in Nashville, Tennessee. Country music was part of home life: his mother, Jennifer Vickery Smith, worked in the country music industry and often interviewed artists, and that exposure helped push him toward writing songs of his own. Before music became his path, he also played baseball, taking part in the 2013 Little League World Series with a South Nashville team representing the Southeast Region.

By the time he was 20, Smith was writing with established Nashville songwriters Ashley Gorley and Zach Crowell. The break came in late 2021, when his song "I Hate Alabama" went viral on TikTok. Billboard reported that the song's momentum helped him sign with Big Machine's Valory imprint, and the magazine named him its Country Rookie of the Month in January 2022.

Sound

Smith works in mainstream Nashville country with a songwriter's emphasis: hometown detail, faith, family and small-town storytelling sit at the center of the records. His Valory work, much of it produced by Zach Crowell, pairs radio-ready polish with plainspoken lyrics. His more recent acoustic material leans the other way, toward stripped-down acoustic performance that puts the voice and the lyric up front.

Key releases

  • Didn't Go Too Far (EP, January 14, 2022, Valory): Produced by Crowell. Its lead single, "Learn from It," reached No. 38 on Billboard's Country Airplay chart.
  • "Take It Slow" (2023): Peaked at No. 52 on Country Airplay and was later certified Gold by the RIAA.
  • "Creek Will Rise" (2023): His breakthrough. Billboard reported that it gave him his first Hot 100 entry, debuting at No. 89, and it went on to peak at No. 12 on Country Airplay. On March 10, 2024, it became the first No. 1 on the UK Country Airplay chart.
  • Smoky Mountains (album, January 26, 2024, Valory): His debut full-length, a 12-song set that debuted at No. 42 on Billboard's Top Country Albums chart.
  • Smoky Mountains Sessions (EP, August 2, 2024, Valory) and the single "Roulette on the Heart" featuring Hailey Whitters, which reached No. 58 on Country Airplay.
  • Stories I've Never Told – Acoustic Tapes (album, March 13, 2026, Elah Records): An acoustic project preceded by the 2025 single "Ain't Got Enough Faith."

Line-up and what's current

Conner Smith is a solo artist. On June 8, 2025, the pickup truck he was driving struck and killed 77-year-old pedestrian Dorothy "Dot" Dobbins in a marked Nashville crosswalk. Metro Nashville Police found no evidence of impairment or distracted driving and issued a misdemeanor citation for failure to yield. On February 19, 2026, the Davidson County District Attorney General's Office confirmed it had withdrawn the citation at the request of Dobbins' family. Later in June 2025, Smith withdrew from two scheduled shows in Ohio.

In a November 2025 post to his fan newsletter, Smith wrote that he had moved on from the record deal he signed at 18 and was now independent. He has since released Stories I've Never Told – Acoustic Tapes and a run of 2026 singles.

Why he fits U-Rock®

U-Rock® Network is built to help artists, affiliates, stations and scene-sters find each other. Smith's story fits that mission. He came out of a songwriting community, broke through on the strength of one song shared by fans, and is now releasing music outside his former Valory deal, which is the kind of artist-first path U-Rock® exists to support. For affiliates and stations that program country, his catalog spans charting Valory singles and stripped-down acoustic recordings. For scene-sters, it's a direct line into the Nashville songwriter tradition.
